Medicine
The disease is characterised by chronic anaemia and painful crises caused by vascular occlusion by abnormally formed red blood cells (sickle cells). The disease leads to many complications and a greatly reduced life expectancy. In the Netherlands, an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 people suffer from this disease, which mainly occurs in people originally from Africa, the Middle East, Asia or southern Europe.
Biemond will describe the impact of sickle cell anaemia on children and adults, and explain new knowledge and the resulting new treatment methods for this serious condition.
Dr B.J. Biemond, Professor of Internal Medicine: Sikkel en de Zeis.
