The research of professor Sennay Ghebreab focuses on identifying ways in which AI systems either mirror or reinforce existing inequalities in society. He is also dedicated to utilising AI systems to help combat these inequalities.

Bouyer’s research interests concern matter-wave interferometry for tests of general relativity in microgravity and detection of gravitational waves. Bouyer has also taken on the role of coordinator of the Quantum Sensing catalyst program of Quantum Delta NL. In the KAT-3 catalyst programme that Bouyer will coordinate, companies and knowledge institutes work together on the development of the technology and applications of quantum sensing.

The Internet and its evolution are at the center of Prof. Grosso’s research interests. She studies the relation between ongoing engineering advances and their effects on computing architectures and digital services, and explores the opportunities offered by novel techniques.

Machine translation, speech recognition, and chatbots have radically transformed people’s everyday lives. However, while most applications have been driven by economic gain, the language sciences have a tremendous potential to yield societal gain as well. Prof. Roelofsen and his colleagues pursue novel methods and applications from a human-centric perspective: methods that add transparency and are not restricted to mainstream languages, and applications for a more inclusive and safe society.

As an UvA professor, Evgeny will focus on Stochastic Dynamics. Stochastic dynamics plays a pivotal role in understanding complex systems where randomness and uncertainty are inherent. By integrating stochastic processes into mathematical models, one can gain insights into phenomena ranging from particle motion in fluids to financial markets' behavior. Understanding stochastic dynamics enables better predictions, risk assessment, and decision-making. Moreover, it helps uncover underlying patterns in seemingly chaotic systems, fostering a deeper comprehension of intricate processes.

As part of his research, Prof. Van Asten focuses on developing methods for forensic chemical identification and for the chemical characterisation of evidence. Among this is the development of methods, sensors and data platforms that enable rapid on-scene chemical analyses so that materials and objects can be examined immediately. This enables the instant generation of valuable information for the tactical investigation and for evidence selection for further analysis.
