On 18 June 2022, a symposium was held by Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics, in memory of Professor Aïda Paalman-de Miranda. As a 17-year-old, Aïda came from Paramaribo to study mathematics in Amsterdam. She evolved into a prominent member of the (former) Mathematical Institute of the University of Amsterdam. In 1980, she was appointed professor of Pure Mathematics.
The Symposium saw the launch of the Aïda Paalman-de Miranda Fund, which aims to encourage talent development among Surinamese students. The Fund's first scholarship students, a mathematics student and a physics student, will begin their studies in September 2023. Besides the fine programme with an inspiring contribution by minister Robbert Dijkgraaf, the symposium generated many new contacts.
