Why study Sign Language Linguistics at the UvA?

Unique programme

The UvA is one of the few universities in the world to offer a fully-fledged programme with a focus on the structure, acquisition and use of visual-spatial languages.

A broad and research-oriented programme that familiarises you with most subfields of linguistics.

Study in a multilingual city

Amsterdam has a thriving community of signers of Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT) with many cultural and social activities.

World-class education

Linguistics at the UvA is ranked highest in Continental Europe and 29th overall according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024.

Is Sign Language Linguistics right for you?

  1. You want to learn and investigate Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT). If you have acquired another sign language elsewhere, you can bring your knowledge of it into the programme.
  2. You are interested in the similarities and differences between sign and spoken languages with respect to their structure and acquisition.
  3. You are keen to be part of a small-scale community of approximately 10 first-year students.
