Henk W. Volberda is Professor of Strategic Management & Innovation at Amsterdam Business School of the University of Amsterdam. Moreover, he is Scientific Director of the Amsterdam Centre for Business Innovation. His research focuses on various themes such as hyper-competition, technological disruption, new business models, strategic flexibility, management innovation and new forms of organisation.
Volberda holds various executive and advisory positions. He is a member of the supervisory board of NXP Semiconductors Netherlands and a member of the scientific advisory committee of the Netherlands Defense Academy. In addition, he is an expert member of the World Economic Forum and a fellow of the European Academy of Management. Previously, he was, among other things, a board member of the Netherlands Centre for Social Innovation and Vice-President Research of the European Academy of Management (EURAM).
Volberda is a member of the editorial board of, among others, the Journal of Strategy and Management, Long Range Planning, Management and Organization Review, Organization Studies, Holland Management Review and Maandblad voor Accountancy en Bedrijfseconomie. Volberda has held visiting scholarships at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and at Cass Business School in London.
Volberda is the author of numerous books, including Strategic Management: Competitiveness and Globalization (Cengage Learning EMEA, 2011), which is used as a strategy textbook by various business schools across Europe. Also, several editions of his book Innovation 3.0: Slimmer managen, organiseren en werken have been published. Some of his other well-known titles that have received international acclaim are Building the Flexible Firm: How to Remain Competitive (Oxford University Press 1998), which has been published in several languages, and Rethinking Strategy (Sage, 2001). His book Reinventing Business Models: How Firms Cope with Disruption (Oxford University Press, 2018) has been recently awarded with the Best Book Award of the European Academy of Management. This year he published three books, namely Strategic Renewal: Core Concepts, Antecedents, and Micro Foundations (Routledge, 2019), Innovatie Jij.nu (Management Impact 2019) and De Nieuwe Professional Service Firm (Scriptum, 2019).
Volberda has published extensively in several international peer-reviewed journals, including Academy of Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of International Business, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Management Science, Organization Science, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and Strategic Management Journal. For the fifth year in a row, Volberda has been included in the Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher list. In addition, he has received numerous awards for his research into organisational flexibility and strategic renewal, including the ERIM Impact Award, the Erasmus Research Award, the SAP Strategy Award and the prestigious Igor Ansoff Strategic Management Award.
The Amsterdam Centre for Business Innovation is host-institute of the World Economic Forum. We annually perform the Dutch Innovation Monitor. Morever, we collect the Dutch data for the Global Competitiveness Index, the Future of Jobs report as well as the Global Gender Gap Index of the World Economic Forum.

Flexibility Excellence Award 2017
Award for research on flexible systems management. Professor Henk Volberda from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) won the Flexibility Excellence Award 2017 from the Global Institute of Flexible Systems Management Society (GIFT). It was the first time the recognition was awarded. Prof. Volberda received the prize at the institute’s annual conference in New Delhi, India. GIFT chairman and managing director Dr Dinesh Kumar Likhi says for the Flexibility Excellence Award, a committee of experts was formed to identify the contributions and efforts of academics worldwide in promoting the concept of flexibility. After rigorous information gathering and subsequent analysis, the committee recommended Prof. Henk W. Volberda as the first recipient of this prestigious award. The award was conferred upon him for his exemplary contribution in the area of flexible systems management which is recognised worldwide. Dr Likhi added that Volberda’s books Building the Flexible Firm: How to Remain Competitive (Oxford University Press, 1998) and his many academic articles are widely acclaimed in the domain.
Best paper runner-up award at Toronto FinTech Conference 2017
PhD candidate Tatjana Schneidmüller and her co-authors Prof. Henk W. Volberda of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) and Mariano L. M. Heyden, received the runner-up award for best paper at the First Annual Toronto FinTech Conference for the conference paper Audience Engagement and the Legitimization of Technological Discontinuities in Regulated Markets: Evidence from FinTech in October 2017. The paper studies how audience engagement - the attention and opinion - of peer bankers, financial services field experts, the general public, and regulators impacts the strategies that established banks employ to tackle the unprecedented wave of innovation in financial services – FinTech. The Annual Toronto FinTech Conference was held in Toronto, Canada on 20-21 October, and aimed to connect scholars in the fields of strategy, entrepreneurship, innovation, organisation theory, finance, and economics to discuss their research on the rise, diffusion, and disruptive potential of financial technologies (FinTech).
EURAM Fellowship
The European Academy of Management (EURAM) has appointed Professor Henk Volberda from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) as one of its fellows. This was announced by EURAM’s President Sibel Yamak at the community’s annual conference in Glasgow on 23 June 2017. RSM’s professor of strategic management and business policy received this international recognition for his scholarly work and his contributions in EURAM’s board as vice-president research. Volberda also chaired EURAM’s annual conference in 2012, won the European Management Review Best Paper Award in 2014, and founded the strategic management Special Interest Groups at EURAM. As a fellow, Volberda aims to contribute to the further professionalisation of EURAM’s management scholar community in terms of quality of the annual conference and the level of the doctoral consortium. EURAM has awarded the distinguished status of ‘EURAM Fellow’ to outstanding scholars since 2012. The ambassadorial and leadership role of the fellows supports the work of the EURAM Board and its Executive Committee. There are only 12 EURAM fellows in total, including Prof. Anna Grandori (Bocconi University, Italy), Prof. Anne Huff (TUM Business School, Germany), and Prof. Joan E. Ricart (IESE Business School, Spain).

Research Award received for PhD study Organizational Flexibility: Change and Preservation. The price was for the first time awarded by the Erasmus Institute for Advanced Studies in Management. ERASM is the Research Institute of the Rotterdam School of Management and was founded in 1993.

NCD Scholarship 1987:
Prize received for Master's Thesis `Flexibility of Organizations'. This prize of EUR 12,500 from the Dutch Institute of Directors is annually awarded to the most outstanding Master's Thesis in the field of Management and Organization. The prize, a scholarship, had to be spent on a supplementary study outside the Netherlands.
