Onderczoeksinteresses: plekken van herinnering; pijnlijk erfgoed; stedelijke ruimte; in situ herdenkingsmusea; literary and cultural analysis; materiële cultuur van de Holocaust; digitale herinneringen; herinneringen van de toekomst; postkoloniale herinneringen van Indonesie en Nederlands-Indië; Holocaust herinnering in Indonesië.

Mijn onderzoek richt zich op de herinnering en het erfgoed van de Holocaust in Europa en Indonesië en de inrichting van musea ten tijde van maatschappelijke veranderingen. 

Digital Holocaust memory

Samen met prof. dr. Yra van Dijk heb ik ik het Europees onderzoeksnetwerk ‘Displaced Memories in a Digital Age’ gecoordineerd dat is gefinancieerd door NWO. Samen met partners uit elf verschillende landen werkten we aan comparatief, transhistorisch en transnationaal onderzoeksproject waarbij de herinneringen aan de Holocaust, de Joegoslavische oorlogen en het totalitaire regime van Franco's Spanje worden geproduceerd en geconsumeeerd, en de manier waarop digitale innovaties hierbij een rol spelen. Hierbij richtten we ons op een Europese onderzoeksaanvraag en gezamenlijke publicaties.

Materialities of postcolonial memory

Een van de onderzoeksprojecten waar ik aan heb gewerkt richt op de omgang van culturele instellingen met het koloniale verleden in de context van het veranderende maatschappelijke debat. Hoe gaan musea om met nieuwe eisen uit de samenleving, en hoe zetten ze hun collecties en museale ervaring in om nieuwe verhalen te vertellen? Dit voorstel is verbonden aan de internationale workshop dit ik met Dr. Paul Bijl in 2015 organiseerde, Colonial Ruin: (In)Visible Sites of Postcolonial Memory. Naar aanleiding van deze workshop organiseren Paul en ik, samen met Dr. Chiara de Cesari and Dr. Ihab Saloul namens de Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM) de internationale ‘AHM Conference 2017: Materialities of Postcolonial Memory’ aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam van 7 tot 9 december 2017, met als keynote speakers Prof. Nikita Dhawan (Innsbruck University) Prof. Lynn Meskell (Stanford University) Prof. Wayne Modest (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) en Prof. Ann Stoler (The New School).

Uit de CfP: 'Now that the privileged position of white people is being rethought in Western societies, and people of color are increasingly vocal about racism in contemporary Europe, the colonial and slavery pasts have more than ever become points of social encounter and contention. Matter and materiality are central concerns in such debates, from the centuries long but often unacknowledged African and Asian presence in Europe to the ruinous effects of the colonial past on communities around the globe to often unarticulated material traces in Europe’s towns and cities. At the same time, material interventions, from protests to new museum spaces, form creative contestations of present and past material injustices. This international conference looks at the awkward, aphasiac and contested memories of Europe’s colonial and slavery past by bringing together scholars from heritage and memory studies, postcolonial and critical race studies, conservation and material culture studies, art, anthropology and all other disciplines represented in AHM.'

Plekken van Holocaust herinnering

Mijn proefschrift Signs of the Shoah: The Hollandsche Schouwburg as a Site of Memory (University of Amsterdam, 2016) beschrijft en analyseert de naoorlogse ontwikkeling van de Hollandsche Schouwburg tot pijnlijk erfgoed, herdenkingsplaats en uiteindelijk herdenkingsmuseum. Deze voormalige schouwburg in Amsterdam werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog gebruikt als deportatieplaats voor meer dan 45.000 joden in en rond Amsterdam. Ik concludeer dat deze plek niet zozeer de nationale herinneringsvertogen volgt, alswel actief vorm heeft gegeven in de loop der tijd. De betekenis die aan deze plek wordt gegeven is niet inherent aan de materiële omgeving, maar komt tot stand door een interactie tussen de plek, locatiespecifieke media en museale interventies, en de bezoekers. Door dit dynamische en open karakter is de Hollandsche Schouwburg altijd belangrijk gebleven en zal deze ook relevant kunnen blijven in de toekomst, omdat dit een concrete, maar tegelijkertijd gemediëerde plek is waar de bezoeker met het verleden in contact kan komen. Mijn promoteres waren prof. dr. Frank van Vree en prof. dr. Rob van der Laarse en het was een samenwerkingsverband tussen de UvA en het Joods Cultureel Kwartier. Naast mijn proefschrift verscheen in 2013 De Hollandsche Schouwburg: theater, deportatieplaats, plek van herinnering, een publieksbundel bij AUP in het Nederlands, en in 2017 Site of Deportation, Site of Memory. The Amsterdam Hollandsche Schouwburg and the Holocaust  een volledig herschreven Engelstalige publieksbundel bij AUP. In 2019 verscheen de handelseditie bij AUP.

De Hollandsche Schouwburg. Theater, Deportatieplaats, Plek van herinnering. 

Op 19 november 2013, zeventig jaar na het laatste transport dat vanaf de Hollandsche Schouwburg vertrok, werd het resultaat van een nauwe samenwerking tussen 12 wetenschappers overhandigd aan minister Bussemaker. Het Nederlandstalige publieksboek is uitgebracht door AUP en is in de boekhandel verkrijgbaar. Ik schreef twee hoofdstukken en was deel van de redactie, samen met Frank van Vree en Hetty Berg. Verder met bijdrages van Evelien Gans, Esther Göbel, Annemiek Gringold, Joost Groeneboer, Coert Krabbe, Joosje Lakmaker, Pauline Micheels, Mark Schellekens en Bart Wallet.

Het boek is uitverkocht en zal in 2017 een herdruk en een Engelstalige editie kennen.

Beschrijving

In dit boek wordt voor het eerst de volledige geschiedenis van De Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam in kaart gebracht. De Schouwburg is een van de meest beladen plekken van Nederland. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden in dit voormalige theater tienduizenden joden samengebracht om vervolgens te worden afgevoerd naar de vernietigingskampen.

Naast de uitgebreide bespreking van deze zwarte bladzijde uit de geschiedenis van het theater wordt ook volop aandacht besteed aan de rest van de rijke historie van de Schouwburg: van de oprichting in 1892 tot aan de inrichting als monument in 1962. 

Het boek staat uitvoerig stil bij de tijd waarin de Schouwburg fungeerde als centrum voor toneel en amusement, waar grote namen uit de Nederlandse theatergeschiedenis hun successen beleefden. Ook gaat De Hollandsche Schouwburg in op de bezettingsperiode, waarin het theater eerst werd aangewezen als 'Joodse Schouwburg', om vanaf 20 juli 1942 ingezet te worden als verzamelplaats van waaruit tienduizenden joden gedeporteerd zouden worden. Het laatste deel van het boek richt zich op de periode na de oorlog, waarin de Schouwburg na lang touwtrekken werd ingericht als monument. Daarbij wordt ook het actuele debat rond de plaats van de Hollandsche Schouwburg in de hedendaagse herinneringscultuur met betrekking tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog niet geschuwd.

Media aandacht

Het NIW bracht een voorpublicatie van Bart Wallets hoofdstuk over het plan een Israël Centrum in de Hollandsche Schouwburg op te richten in 1953. Het Parool schreef een uitgebreid artikel over het boek op 18 november. De Groene Amsterdammer publiceerde op 20 november naar aanleiding van de vondst van de memoires van Hetty Bloemgarten door haar broer Salvador een mooi artikel over haar leven, dat zich een korte periode in de Joodsche Schouwburg afspeelde. Daarnaast was er aandacht voor het boek in het Noord Hollands Dagblad, enkele andere regionale kranten, de Groene Amsterdammer, BMGN Huygens genootschap (tijdschrift van KNAW), Geschiedenis Magazine, Historisch Nieuwsblad, Kleio, het NRC Handelsblad en het befaamde AT5 ontbijtnieuws.

Max van Weezel interviewde mij voor Met het oog op morgen. NWO publiceerde een stuk op haar website. Dr. Geraldien von Frijtag Drabbe Künzel schreef een recensie voor het tijdschrift BMGN - Low Countries Historical Review.
