Housing

Amsterdam faces an ongoing housing crisis, and securing accommodation can take several months. Finding permanent housing often requires considerable time, effort and costs. The UvA cannot guarantee housing or help for incoming students as the housing crisis goes beyond the university's capacity. Please carefully consider this challenge and its potential impact on your studies before committing to study here. Find more information about housing in Amsterdam below.

The UvA Student Housing Office helps international students in finding furnished accommodation for their first year of study. While the University of Amsterdam does not own these rooms, it collaborates with external housing providers like DUWO, De Key, and Student Experience to increase housing availability. Rooms are allocated through a randomized lottery system, and a positive lottery result is not guaranteed. You can stay for a fixed rental period (usually 1 or 2 semesters); early cancellation is only possible in exceptional cases. A one-year limit applies to ensure more students get access each year.

As students are ultimately responsible for arranging their own housing, the UvA Student Housing Office also offers practical tips, resources, and guidance on how and where to find housing independently, along with general information about the Dutch housing market.
