My main interest is in the field of Science Education, particularly in inquiry-based learning and teaching. I am fascinated by questions concerning individual differences in and adaptive guidance of students’ inquiry behaviors, and teachers’ professional learning on inquiry-based teaching. In studying these topics I have taken a wide range of approaches. I have investigated student learning in preschool, primary and secondary settings, as well as teacher learning in the workplace and family learning in museums. To this end, I have applied a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods with a special focus on examining individual differences. I have developed an expertise in the design of observational measures, as evidenced by the development of the Exploratory Behavior Scale for quantifying preschoolers’ inquiry behaviors in informal educational settings (See for example Van Schijndel, Franse & Raijmakers, 2010).
