Commander (Royal Netherlands Navy) Dr. Martin Fink is an external senior researcher in the Role of Armed Conflict-program at the Amsterdam Centre of International Law (ACIL). He obtained his law degree from the University of Leiden and holds a PhD of the University of Amsterdam on Maritime Interception Operations and the Law of Naval Operations.
Commander Fink is a military legal advisor in the Royal Netherlands Navy, and has held different postings, among which were postings at the Maritime Battlestaff of the Netherlands Maritime Force, the NATO Joint Force Command in Naples (Italy), the Netherlands Defence Academy (NLDA), as a lecturer of the laws of armed conflict and international law, and at the Netherlands Admiralty. Currently he holds the position of head of legal affairs of the Royal Marechaussee (KMar).
He participated in several operations, among which were Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, the UN-mission UNMISS in South-Sudan and was in 2019 deployed to the Israel and the Palestinian Territories.
His academic interests are primarily the international law of military operations, and in particular the law applicable to naval operations and the laws of naval warfare.
